We’re now just under three months from the oldest plastic bat and ball tournament on Planet Earth! Two days of fun await on July 20-21 at Memorial Park in Midlothian, Illinois for the 40th World Wiffle® Ball Championship.
For this month’s newsletter, we are excited to announce a change to this year’s Home Run Derby. Plus, we’ll have some fun with the Schuster brothers, who of course, play for last year’s runner-up and the 4-time World Champions, Funky Plastic Offspring.
But first, a few reminders for you.
1) Make sure to sign up at worldwiffleball.org by June 1 in order to receive t-shirts for each player on your roster. For this year’s shirt, we paid tribute to the underappreciated Wiffle® bat and threw in some “Pitt Blue” to make it pop.
2) The referral refund will continue throughout the final registration deadline of June 30. If you refer a new team, your team (you also can be a new team) and the new team you referred will receive $30 off your entry fee. More details here.
3) More importantly, come join us from 11-4 on Sunday, May 19 at PetSmart in Tinley Park (7340 W. 191st Street), where we will be helping the South Suburban Humane Society find homes for some animals. Anyone who adopts a pet at the event, will have the opportunity to register for this year’s WWBC for $75.
Every penny after taking care of the tournament costs (field rental, shirts, setup costs, equipment, insurance, trophies, etc.) will go to SSHS. When we agreed to take over the tournament in 2017, having a charitable aspect associated with the tournament was a necessity. We have spent countless hours trying to reduce tournament costs, find ways to lower costs for our teams, all while being able to make a difference for a worthy cause. We absolutely cannot thank you all enough for participating in the WWBC and helping animals in need.
Last year, 36 wifflers took their shot to become the “King of Plastic Swing.” Known longballer, Dan Lowe took home the crown after a wild, entertaining Final Four.
This year, we’re going to give you a chance to win some cash. In true 50/50 fashion, the winner of the 2019 HR Derby will take home half of the pot.
Qualification for the four-person hit-off will take place in the morning / early afternoon, with the Derby champion crowned prior to the final pool play games. It will still be $5 to enter, and we’re hoping that everyone takes a shot to be the 2019 “King of Plastic Swing.”
Ten Questions with the Schusters
For the last 15 years, anyone who has attended a World Wiffle® Ball Championship has undoubtedly seen a Schuster brother flying around the outfield, making ridiculous catches for Funky Plastic Offspring. We sat down with the three Schuster brothers (Dan, Randy and Joe) to talk wiffle and have a little fun.
