Let’s get to some details about the return of the Home Run Derby and our new home in the Chicago Southland, as well as a trip down memory lane.
Home Run Derby
We’re fired up to bring back the Home Run Derby on Saturday.
Between games, head over to the designated Derby field, bring $5 and a pitcher, and start hitting some yabos. Proceeds from the Derby will go to our friends at South Suburban Humane Society. All tournament participants can seek to qualify for a four-person Derby tournament after pool play has concluded.
The rules are simple. You either hit a homer, or you make an out. Each Derby contestant will get 10 outs. Can you approach Josh Hamilton’s ridiculous 27-homer round in a past MLB All-Star Derby?
What to Do When You’re Not Wifflin’
Since we moved from the North Side of Chicago, to the South Side, let’s get acquainted with the area. With 294 bordering Memorial Park to the North, Midlothian sits in a perfect spot to be able to experience what the Chicago Southland has to offer.
Besides downtown Chicago nearby with good eats and activities such as visiting Lake Michigan, the Taste of Chicago, and Navy Pier, or even taking a segway tour, there is plenty to do.
Five minutes from Memorial Park, the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League will be playing Friday and Saturday night at Standard Bank Stadium, which means FIREWORKS!
How about a cold one to help with the soreness after a long day of wiffling? Here are some of the great local breweries to grab a beer:
Red – Memorial Park
1 Horse Thief Hollow – Chicago, IL
2 Open Outcry Brewing Company – Chicago, IL
3 Blue Island Beer Company – Blue Island, IL
4 Hailstorm Brewing Co – Tinley Park, IL
5 350 Brewing Company – Tinley Park, IL
6 Flossmoor Station – Flossmoor, IL
7 18th Street Brewing – Hammond, IN
8 3 Floyds Brewpub – Munster, IN
And if you are into music, there are options for all generations. The Cubs are out of town, but Jimmy Buffett (Friday) and Journey/Def Leppard (Saturday) will have Wrigley packed. For the younger crowd, Imagine Dragons (Friday) and Kesha/Macklemore (Saturday) will be less than 15 minutes from Memorial Park in Tinley Park.
Check out the Chicago Southland website, to see more of what the area has to offer.
A Trip Back to 2008…
In one of the greatest championship games in World Wiffle® Ball Championship history, the Balco Boys defeated Funky Plastic Offspring, 15-14, in a thriller to win the 2008 crown.
The game had everything. The Schuster boys were flying around the outfield keeping FPO in the game by robbing homers. Hall-of-Famer, Joe Stratton, hit a ball that hit the street surrounding Rose Park, nearly 50 feet behind the left-center field fence. We’re not convinced the ball has actually landed yet.
2008 marked Balco’s first of two championships (2010), as Balco and FPO (2007, 2010, 2013-14) won six titles combined in eight years from 2007-2014. Both are in the field, and serious threats to take home the 2018 World Wiffle® Ball Championship.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@WorldWiffleball) for additional updates leading up to the tournament. The schedule will be released shortly after the June 29 registration deadline, both on social media and by email.
July 14 will be here in no time!
