As we are now less than three months from the 39th World Wiffle® Ball Championship (July 14-15, 2018 in Midlothian, IL), we have some exciting/important announcements to make regarding the format of the tournament, the deadline to enter, and our relationship with a local charity.
The tournament is quickly approaching, and while we wish we could allow teams to walk up on July 14 and play, there need to be deadlines for planning purposes and to make sure the tournament runs efficiently.
This year, there will be two registration periods/deadlines:
Now – June 1, 2018 – $149/team, 4 games guaranteed + official t-shirts for rostered players
June 2, 2018 – June 29, 2018 – $149/team, 4 games guaranteed, no t-shirts
With the ability to accommodate more teams and fields, the amount of teams that advance to the Sunday single-elimination tournament will increase. In order to advance to Sunday in previous years, teams had three ways to qualify: 1) win its respective division; 2) go 3-1 in round-robin play; and 3) win the 2-on-2 tournament at the close of Saturday.
Simply put, we want more teams to experience the excitement of Sunday.
The amount of teams that make it to Sunday will depend on the total number of teams that enter the WWC. Qualification will not change for teams that win its division or go 3-1. Additionally, there will still be a play-in format (similar to the popular 2-on-2 tournament) after round-robin play has concluded for teams to qualify for Sunday. To keep with tradition, teams must go at least 2-2 to have a chance of advancing.
We plan to announce further details on Sunday qualification when the Saturday round-robin schedule is released in early July.
After a five-year hiatus, the HR Derby is back! All players will have the opportunity to qualify for $5, with the top four qualifiers advancing to a four-person tournament after the completion of round-robin play. Further details will be announced closer to the tournament.
We are thrilled to announce that a portion of the entry fees for the 2018 World Wiffle® Ball Championship, as well as all proceeds from the HR Derby, will be donated to the South Suburban Humane Society. We have first-hand knowledge of the tremendous work that South Suburban does in finding homes and providing resources for pets in Chicago’s south suburbs and Northwest Indiana.
